NELFUND Loan Approved But Not Disbursed? The Real Reason Your ₦20,000 Upkeep is Delayed (March 2026)

1. The “Approved” vs. “Disbursed” Trap
Many students believe that once the dashboard says “Approved,” the money is automatically sent. This is incorrect.
- Approval means NELFUND has reviewed your NIN, BVN, and JAMB details and found you eligible.
- Disbursement (The ₦20,000 or ₦25,000 Upkeep) only triggers AFTER your University Bursary/ICT unit completes the “Institutional Verification” on the Student Verification System (SVS).
2. The Real Reason: Your School Hasn’t “Confirmed” You
In late February 2026, NELFUND MD Akintunde Sawyerr revealed that several institutions are failing to update their student lists.
- The Problem: NELFUND cannot pay upkeep to a student if the school hasn’t confirmed that the student is actually on campus for the 2025/2026 session.
- The Bot: If your school is currently in a “Postponed Exam” phase (like AE-FUNAI) or has not officially resumed its session, the Bursary often delays the upload of the “Enrollment Confirmation List.” No list = No upkeep.

3. Why Your Upkeep is “Pending” While Tuition is Paid
Notice that your school fees might be “Paid” while your upkeep is “Pending”?
- NELFUND pays Institutional Charges (Tuition) in bulk to the school.
- Upkeep Allowance is paid individually to students. If your school has received the bulk tuition but hasn’t verified your specific matriculation number for the current semester, NELFUND will hold your upkeep money in their “Escrow” account.
How to Fix the NELFUND Disbursement Delay Today
If your loan has been approved for more than 14 days without payment, do not just wait. Take these steps:
- Visit the Bursary/ICT Unit: Don’t go to the Dean of Students. Go to the ICT or Bursary Department and ask: “Has the school uploaded the verified student list for the 2025/2026 NELFUND cycle?”
- Verify Your Bank Account Type: NELFUND has flagged issues with digital wallets. Ensure the bank account on your portal is a Commercial Bank (e.g., UBA, Zenith, GTB). Many students using OPay or PalmPay have reported “Failed Disbursement” errors in March 2026.
- The “Upkeep Box” Check: Log back in and ensure you actually checked the box for “Request for Upkeep.” If you only applied for “Institutional Charges,” you will never receive a monthly stipend.

Seeing the status “Approved” on your portal is a positive sign. Wait and see that it changes to “Disbursed”, then you may revisit your student portal and print out the single receipt therein. If you applied for upkeep, NELFUND will pay directly to your bank account.

You should go to the ICT to help you reprint your single receipt if you do not know how to do it yourself. After reprinting your single receipt, it should reflect on your student portal that your fees are paid.

Hence your institutional fee is disbursed and Nelfund stopped your upkeep after three months, there is really no implication except that you will no longer receive upkerep.

The status “Approved” and the status “Disbursed” are two different things. Your loan is yet not disbursed, that is the reason nothing has reflected your portal and no upkeep yet. However, seeing the status “Approved” is already a good sign.
