FG Releases Final Approved Textbooks for 2026–2028 School Years

The Federal Government has released the final list of ranked and approved textbooks for use in Nigerian schools for the 2026–2028 period, introducing a new tracking system designed to strengthen transparency in the selection and use of instructional materials. The Federal Ministry of Education announced the release after completing the first phase of the national textbook ranking exercise. The first phase covers textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS 1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS 1). According to the ministry, every approved textbook has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code, alongside information including the title, author or authors, publisher and year of publication. The new identification system is intended to make it easier for schools, education authorities and other stakeholders to identify approved materials and monitor their procurement and use. The ministry said the additional process of generating and assigning the unique codes contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final list. The Federal Government said the textbook ranking exercise is being implemented in phases. Following the completion of the first phase, preparations will begin for the second round, which will cover Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2. The same tracking and identification measures will be applied to textbooks approved under the subsequent phase. The ministry has urged publishers, schools, education authorities and procurement agencies to consult the official approved list when selecting and purchasing textbooks for the affected classes. The Federal Ministry of Education said the exercise is part of efforts to improve the quality and relevance of instructional materials available to teachers and learners while strengthening accountability in textbook provision. With the introduction of the Ranking/QR Tracking Code, stakeholders will have an additional means of checking approved titles and distinguishing them from materials that have not gone through the federal ranking process. The ministry is encouraging schools and other education stakeholders to comply with the approved list when providing textbooks for learners in the affected classes. The complete list of the ranked and approved textbooks, including the individual tracking codes, has been made available by the Federal Ministry of Education. The development comes as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen the quality of teaching and learning materials across the country’s education system.
