The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has deployed 3,000 personnel across the Federal Capital Territory ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations. The deployment is part of intensified security arrangements aimed at protecting lives and property during the Independence Day celebrations on October 1. NSCDC personnel have been deployed to strategic locations across Abuja, including markets, shopping centres, motor parks, recreational areas and other locations expected to attract large crowds. Critical national assets and infrastructure are also receiving special attention as part of the security operation. Personnel from different specialised units of the corps are participating in the deployment. These include the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Agro Rangers, Explosives Unit and Counter-Terrorism Unit. The command has also activated undercover personnel to monitor activities and gather intelligence across different parts of the Federal Capital Territory. Uncompleted buildings and other locations that could potentially be used as criminal hideouts are also being monitored. The FCT Command has directed Area Commanders and Divisional Officers to maintain strong security coverage in their respective areas throughout the Independence celebrations. Residents have also been encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies. Nigeria will officially mark 66 years of independence on October 1, with activities taking place in different parts of the country. The NSCDC said its deployment is aimed at ensuring that residents can participate in the celebrations in a peaceful and secure environment while government facilities and other critical infrastructure remain protected.
