[UPDATE] AE-FUNAI 100L Student Injured in Afikpo Road Crash; Sister Reportedly Dead, Mother Unconscious

AFIKPO, EBONYI STATE — March 12, 2026: Following earlier reports of a road accident along the Afikpo–Abakaliki road on Wednesday, March 11, SHAST Campus News has obtained new information identifying one of the victims involved in the crash.

The injured student has been identified as Uche Amanda Sopuruchi, a 100-level student in the Public Administration Department at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AE–FUNAI).

Sources indicate that she was traveling with members of her family for her matriculation ceremony when the accident occurred along the Afikpo–Abakaliki route in Ebonyi State.

Situation of the Family

Information available to SHAST Campus News indicates that the crash has had devastating consequences for the student’s family.

Sister: Amanda’s sister reportedly died in the accident.

Mother: Her mother is said to be unconscious as of the time of this report.

Student’s Condition: Uche Amanda Sopuruchi reportedly sustained severe injuries, including significant facial trauma, and is currently in critical condition. She is expected to undergo surgery today, according to a source.

Another Account

A source who spoke to SHAST Campus News, identifying himself as the boyfriend of Amanda’s sister, stated that the driver who also died in the crash was his uncle.

“My uncle was the driver, and he died alongside my girlfriend. My girlfriend, who is Amanda’s sister, and my uncle both died instantly.”
