Lagos State Evacuates 230 Students from University of Jos Over Security Concerns

The Lagos State Government has successfully evacuated more than *230 students* of Lagos origin from the University of Jos (UNIJOS) in Plateau State due to rising security tensions in the state capital.

The evacuation exercise was coordinated by the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education on the directive of Governor *Babajide Sanwo-Olu*. The students were transported back to Lagos in buses accompanied by security escorts.

   Details of the Evacuation

The operation followed the University of Jos management’s directive on April 1, 2026, asking all students to immediately vacate the hostels after heightened insecurity linked to the recent Angwan Rukuba attack and subsequent unrest in Jos.

Upon arrival in Lagos, the evacuated students were debriefed and successfully reunited with their families.

   Lagos State Government’s Position

The state government emphasised its commitment to the safety and education of its citizens studying outside the state. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration described the swift evacuation as a necessary precautionary measure to protect the lives of Lagos indigenes amid the prevailing security situation in Plateau State.

This is one of several states that have moved to evacuate their students from UNIJOS in the past few days. Earlier, Benue State had also deployed over 30 buses to bring back its indigenes.
