NECO Fixes May 25 Deadline, Warns Schools: No Extension for 2026 SSCE Registration

The National Examinations Council has fixed May 25, 2026, as the final date for normal registration for the 2026 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), with a hard stop on extensions.

The council’s position is direct: once the deadline passes, there will be no reopening of the portal.

According to official registration guidelines and updated notices reviewed on April 3, 2026, schools are expected to complete all entries before the cutoff date. 

The timeline is fixed:

Normal registration closes: Monday, May 25, 2026

Late registration window: May 26 – May 29, 2026

Final shutdown: 11:59 PM, May 29, 2026

After that, the system closes completely. No uploads. No corrections. No exceptions. 

Late registration is not free. Any school that misses the initial deadline will pay an additional penalty per candidate before the final closure. 

The council has also made it clear that registration is only valid after full completion — payment, biometric capture, and online upload must all be done before a candidate is recognised in the system. 

This is where many schools fail.

Partial registration does not count. Offline entries without final upload will be rejected once the portal shuts down.

There is another pressure point: validation. Schools are required to verify candidate data before upload. Errors discovered after submission attract penalties, and in some cases, cannot be corrected after closure.

For students, the implication is simple. If your school delays, you risk missing the entire exam cycle.

There is no backup window beyond May 29.

This applies strictly to school-based candidates writing the June/July SSCE. Private candidates fall under a separate registration cycle later in the year.

As of April 4, 2026, the registration portal remains open, but the deadline is no longer flexible.
