Obafemi Awolowo University to Host 2026 West African Universities Games

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has officially secured the hosting rights for the 2026 West African Universities Games (WAUG). The announcement was formalized today, April 11, 2026, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the university administration and the WAUG governing body.  

The selection of OAU came after a rigorous evaluation of the institution’s sporting facilities and its capacity to manage a multi-sport event of this magnitude. This hosting right marks a significant milestone for the university, which is expected to undergo major facility upgrades to accommodate athletes from across the West African sub-region. The 2026 Games are projected to boost local tourism in Osun State and provide a platform for student-athletes to showcase their talents on an international stage.
