FUOYE VC Sounds Alarm on Substandard Buildings, Inaugurates Building Standard Committee

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) is taking a bold stand against declining infrastructure standards following a recent ceiling collapse incident.

On April 3, 2026, Vice-Chancellor Professor Joshua Ogunwole inaugurated a seven-man University Building Standards Committee with a clear mandate: develop strict guidelines to guarantee quality, durability, and safety in every construction project on campus.

Speaking during the inauguration in his Conference Room, Professor Ogunwole did not mince words. “To me, there is no building here in FUOYE that is worthy to be referred to as a standard university building,” he said. “A university must be known for quality. Others should come here to learn how things are done.”

He cited worrying examples of poor workmanship, including a recent incident where part of the ceiling collapsed in the Senate Chamber while people were eating. “We are building structures that accommodate thousands, yet the quality of materials used is not up to standard. We have over 60,000 students entrusted to us, we cannot afford to fail them,” the VC stressed.

Professor Ogunwole also expressed frustration with contractors and the university’s Physical Planning Unit (PPU). “I am beginning to lose confidence in the Physical Planning Unit,” he said. “Contractors are only interested in making profit and leaving. Henceforth, any contractor working for this university must adhere strictly to our standards.”

He pointed out other visible signs of compromise: toilets serving up to 1,000 users with inadequate facilities, substandard electrical cables, and paint that fades within two years.

The new committee, chaired by Dr. Aare Foluso Awe, has been given a two-week deadline to submit its report. Members include Arc. Akinyemi Oke, Engr. John O. Iyilade, QS. Ojo Ademola Eyitope, QS. Olufadeji O.K, Bldr. Doluwamu Omolara T., and Secretary Mrs. Adekunle Oreoluwa D.

In his response, Chairman Dr. Aare Foluso Awe assured the VC of the team’s full commitment.

This move comes at a time when many Nigerian universities are grappling with rapid expansion and quality control challenges. For FUOYE students and staff, the message is clear: safety and standards will no longer be negotiable.

The university has not reported any casualties from the ceiling collapse, but the VC’s swift action shows leadership is determined to prevent future risks.
