Will AE-FUNAI Exams Be Postponed Again? Students React as Killing of Ndufu-Alike Monarch Sparks Fear
IKWO — A heavy cloud of mourning has settled over Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI) following the confirmed death of the traditional ruler of the host community, Ezeogo Francis Igwe. With the university scheduled to begin first-semester examinations on March 12, students already on campus are voicing deep concerns regarding the security of the environment.
The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed on Friday, March 6, that the monarch—who was abducted on March 1—was tragically killed by his captors. While nine suspects have been arrested, tension in the Ndufu-Alike community remains high.
The Reality for Students on Ground
For the thousands of students currently within and around the university, the tragedy is a direct threat to the stability required for examinations. The atmosphere on campus has shifted from academic preparation to heightened vigilance.

Why a Second Postponement is Being Discussed
Although the Registrar, T. Ifeanyi Igwe, Esq., had previously shifted the exams by two weeks to accommodate university events, students are citing new emergency security grounds for a further delay:
Targeted Unrest: Students in off-campus areas like Ikwo and Ndufu-Alike fear becoming targets of unrest. Reports of lodges being attacked or burnt have already forced some students to relocate.
Safety of Movement: The trek between lecture halls and off-campus lodges—particularly for late-afternoon papers—is a major source of anxiety given the current communal tension.
Official Position: Is March 12 Still the Date?
As of Saturday, March 7, 2026, the university management has not issued an official memo shifting the exams. The current timeline remains:
March 11: Rescheduled 14th Matriculation Ceremony.
March 12: Commencement of Exams for Returning Students.
March 16: GST and CBT Exams for 100-Level Students.
The Student Union Government (SUG) is reportedly monitoring the situation closely as the university balances the academic calendar against student safety. Until a formal announcement is made, students are urged to remain vigilant.
