The Legend of the "Ghost Lecturer" Who Disappeared for an Entire Semester

If you’ve ever gone to a 7:00 AM lecture in a hall packed like a BRT bus, stood for two hours because all the plastic chairs were taken, and wondered if the lecturer was ever going to show up—this story is for you. Except, this didn’t happen to just one class. It happened to an entire department at a major federal university.

It was a breezy October morning, and the 300-level Economics students were sitting in a massive, hot lecture theatre. It was the first week after a long ASUU strike, and everyone was eager to look at their course outline for “Advanced Microeconomics”—a notorious, high-stakes course known for dropping people’s CGPA faster than a network glitch on a portal.

The clock struck 8:00 AM. No lecturer.

8:30 AM. Still nothing.

The Class Rep, a stressed-out guy trying to maintain order, told everyone to stay put. Finally, at 8:45 AM, a tall man in a sharply pressed, vintage brown suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase, walked in. He didn’t look at anyone. He just walked straight to the whiteboard, pulled a fresh black marker out of his pocket, snapped the cap off, and began to write.

He didn’t introduce himself. He didn’t say “Good morning.” He just wrote complex mathematical formulas across the entire board, moving with intense speed. The students, frantic and terrified, scribbled into their higher education notebooks as fast as their hands could move. For two hours, the only sound in the hall was the aggressive squeaking of the marker against the whiteboard.

At exactly 10:45 AM, the man capped his marker, picked up his briefcase, and walked out. He didn’t say a single word.

The next week, the exact same thing happened. He arrived at 8:45 AM, filled the whiteboard with brutal equations, and vanished. No textbook recommendation, no handouts, no office hours. Students tried to follow him after class to ask questions, but by the time they squeezed through the crowded exit door, he was gone. He became a campus myth—”The Silent Prof.”

By week six, the continuous assessment (CA) test was approaching, and the students were completely lost. The Class Rep finally decided to do some digging. He went up to the HOD’s (Head of Department) office to find out the Silent Prof’s name so they could look for his office room number.

The Class Rep walked into the front office and described the man: “The tall man in the vintage brown suit who teaches Advanced Microeconomics at 8:45 AM.”

The department secretary froze. She looked at the Class Rep, confused. “What are you talking about? Nobody has been assigned to teach that course yet. Dr. Alao, who usually teaches it, is still away on his sabbatical in the UK.”

The Class Rep laughed, thinking it was a joke. “Mummy, please na. The man has been coming every Thursday for six weeks. He fills the whole whiteboard!”

The secretary called the HOD out of his office. Together, they walked down to the lecture theatre the following Thursday at 8:45 AM to see for themselves.

The entire class was seated, pens ready. 8:45 AM came and went. 9:00 AM. 9:30 AM.

The man never showed up. He never came back for the rest of the semester.

To this day, nobody in that university knows who the man in the brown suit actually was. Some students swear he was a brilliant rogue academic from a neighboring university who just liked the acoustics of their hall; others joked he was an aggrieved ghost trying to finish his PhD thesis from the 1980s.

Because there was no official lecturer on record and no one to grade them, the department had to scramble to find a replacement lecturer who gave the entire class an automatic ‘C’ just to save the semester. It remains the ultimate legendary campus clutch performance—and the biggest mystery in the school’s history.
