NELFUND 2025/2026: Is the Portal Really Closed? Check If You Can Still Apply

If you’ve been on Twitter (X) or your school’s WhatsApp groups lately, you’ve probably seen the “Panic Posts.” Some people say the NELFUND portal is dead, while others are still successfully submitting. So, what’s actually happening?

The short answer: It’s not a “one-size-fits-all” situation anymore.

1. The Deadline Isn’t the Same for Everyone

While the general nationwide deadline was officially February 27, 2026, NELFUND just approved a selective extension on March 12–13.

This extension applies strictly to institutions that formally requested more time to allow their students to finish applying. If your school management reached out to NELFUND officially, your portal window is still open—but likely only for a few more days.

2. Why Some Students are Stuck at “Pending”

If your application is stuck, it’s probably not a system glitch. For you to finish your application, your school must upload a verified student list to the Student Verification System (SVS). If your school is slow with their data, your dashboard won’t move. This is why following up with your Student Affairs office is the most important move you can make right now.

3. Confirmed vs. Rumor

• CONFIRMED: Over ₦206 billion has already been disbursed to more than 1.1 million students across Nigeria. The money is moving.
• CONFIRMED: If your institution hasn’t started its 2025/2026 session yet, they must submit their approved academic calendar to NELFUND to get a “special concession” for their students.
• RUMOR: “The portal is closed for every Nigerian student.” False. It depends on your school’s specific verification status.

4. Your “To-Do” List Today

• Match Your Data: Ensure the name on your NIN matches your school portal exactly. Any mismatch will cause an automatic delay.
• Check Your Dashboard: If it says “Verified,” you’re in the queue for payment. If it’s blank, head to your Student Affairs office immediately.
• Don’t Forget the Upkeep: When applying, make sure you actually check the box for “Upkeep” if you want the monthly stipend. You can’t add it later once the application is submitted.
