AEFUNAI Student Petitions Vice Chancellor Over Alleged Sexual Assault by Some Host Community Indigenes

Marycynthia Chukwuamaka Nwafor, a student in the Department of Foreign Languages at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike (AEFUNAI), has formally petitioned the Vice Chancellor regarding a reported sexual assault by members of the local host community.

In a letter dated May 30, 2026, Nwafor recounted that at approximately 9:57 AM that day, she was physically harassed by a group of men while purchasing breakfast near her residence. According to the student’s account, the group was openly consuming marijuana. She alleged that one individual touched her inappropriately and subsequently threatened her with physical violence and disappearance when she challenged his conduct.

Nwafor described the encounter as part of a recurring pattern of harassment involving local youths and motorcycle riders in Ikwo. The student also challenged the tendency to blame victims for their clothing choices, asserting that safety is a fundamental right that should not be dependent on attire.

In her appeal for urgent administrative intervention, Nwafor proposed the following measures:

Community Dialogue: Engaging Ikwo community leaders to address the protection of students.

Security Coordination: Increasing patrols by campus security and local law enforcement in student residential areas.

Public Awareness: Launching sensitization programs for local transport workers and youths on consent and the legal repercussions of harassment.

Policy Strengthening: Enhancing the university’s sexual harassment policy and implementing confidential reporting mechanisms for students.

Nwafor emphasized that these interventions are necessary to ensure that female students can pursue their education without fear for their safety or dignity within the university’s host community.
