The University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED) chapter of ASUU has entered a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike. The shutdown officially took effect on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at exactly 11:25 AM, freezing all formal academic operations on campus.
In a joint statement issued by the Branch Chairperson, Comrade Abraham Oladebeye, and Secretary, Comrade Adeniran O. Akinola, the union confirmed that the final resolution followed the expiration of a mandatory 14-day ultimatum. The union expressed frustration over the Ondo State Government’s failure to implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement and the non-payment of accrued salary arrears dating back to January 1, 2026. The lecturers chose immediate withdrawal as the only viable mechanism to demand their financial entitlements.
The strike directive mandates complete non-cooperation with all statutory university operations. Faculty members have withdrawn from undergraduate and postgraduate lectures, continuous assessments, and examinations. Furthermore, the suspension covers departmental, faculty, committee, and Senate meetings, irrespective of whether they are scheduled physically or virtually. Research project supervisions, industrial training monitoring, and required student fieldwork are entirely halted.
To enforce this directive, the branch has activated its Strike Coordinating Committee to monitor compliance and ensure no lecturer breaches the industrial action. This aggressive closure has generated profound anxiety among students and parents, particularly as the medical institution operates on tightly bound professional training timelines that do not easily accommodate prolonged disruptions. The union maintains that operations will remain frozen until the 2025 agreement terms are visibly executed and the outstanding arrears are fully settled in the university accounts.
