Suspected Kidnapper Arrested With AK-47 on Benin–Sapele Road in Edo


Security operatives have arrested a suspected kidnapper and recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition during a targeted operation along the Benin–Sapele Road in Edo State. The suspect, identified as Olamide Oyeniyi, was arrested on September 12, 2026, at Obaretin Community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area by troops of the 4 Brigade Nigerian Army operating under Operation WABAIZIGAN. According to the Nigerian Army, troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, one magazine and eight rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition from the suspect. Other items recovered included a Tecno mobile phone, two bags, a torchlight, a music box and assorted charms. The arrest was carried out as part of ongoing operations aimed at disrupting criminal activities and protecting major transportation routes in Edo State. The Army said the suspect and the recovered items remain in military custody as investigations continue. Authorities are working to establish whether Oyeniyi has links with other criminal elements and determine his possible involvement in kidnapping and related criminal activities along the Benin–Sapele route. The development comes amid continued security concerns around kidnapping and other violent crimes in Edo State, particularly along major roads and communities. The Nigerian Army said it remains committed to denying criminal elements freedom of action and protecting communities as well as critical transportation corridors. It also said it would continue working with other security agencies to strengthen security across Edo State.
