FAVE SPEAKS ON DOUBLE STANDARDS FACING FEMALE ARTISTS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

Nigerian singer Fave has spoken about the challenges female artists face in the music industry, particularly the attention placed on their appearance, dressing and physical features.Speaking during a recent appearance on the Afropolitan Podcast, Fave said female artists are judged differently from their male counterparts. In her words:“It’s harder for female artists to blow. Female artists aren’t measured by talent but by what they wear. If your tummy isn’t flat… it’s never really about the music; it’s more about people’s sexual desires or their fantasies about you.”Fave continued:“And I think that right there is a problem, because it becomes more about how decently you are dressed before people listen to you.”She also compared the expectations placed on female artists with those placed on male artists, saying:“But when it comes to men, they aren’t held to that same standard.”The singer further spoke about the efforts female artists put into their careers, saying:“I think the female artists do way more. They bring their best to the stage, and they leave it all there.”Fave also said that she is still working to have audiences focus on the music she creates.“I’m still trying to get people to focus on the music that I have to give you, as opposed to everything else.”Fave’s comments came during her discussion about her experiences in the music industry and the challenges she believes female artists encounter while building their careers.
