Nigeria is seeking to move beyond traditional outsourcing and position itself as a provider of higher-value artificial intelligence and technology-enabled services to the global market. The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, highlighted the opportunity during discussions linked to the 81st United Nations General Assembly. According to him, Nigeria’s growing digital workforce could be positioned to serve international companies through AI-enabled services rather than relying mainly on conventional business-process outsourcing. The strategy would involve combining Nigeria’s large pool of young talent with artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure and internationally competitive skills. The push comes as companies around the world increasingly integrate AI into customer service, software development, data analysis, business operations and other areas. Nigeria’s large youth population gives the country a potentially significant workforce for the expanding digital economy. However, developing that workforce requires more than simply increasing the number of people who know how to use AI tools. Reliable internet connectivity, cloud infrastructure, access to computing resources, cybersecurity and appropriate regulatory frameworks are also important to attracting international digital work. The NITDA leadership has therefore emphasised the need to build an ecosystem capable of supporting higher-value digital services. The objective is to allow Nigerian workers and technology companies to participate more directly in the global digital economy. For young Nigerians, the shift could create opportunities in areas ranging from software and data services to AI-assisted customer support, cybersecurity and other technology-related fields. The challenge will be ensuring that training, infrastructure and access to international markets develop alongside the country’s ambitions. Nigeria’s latest AI push reflects the wider global competition among countries seeking to capture jobs and investment created by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence.
