UNN Shuts Main Gate 2 for Reconstruction
The management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has officially announced the temporary closure of Main Gate 2 (the exit gate) at the Nsukka campus. This closure, effective from April 14, 2026, is to allow for the total demolition and reconstruction of the gatehouse and surrounding perimeter.
Key Logistics and Traffic Diversion
To maintain campus security and traffic flow, the following adjustments are now in place:
- Main Gate 1 (Entry Gate): Has been converted to a dual-purpose entry and exit point.
- Security Checkpoints: Expect increased security presence at Gate 1 to manage the bottleneck caused by two-way traffic.
- Alternative Routes: The Greenview (Beach) Gate and the Odenigwe Gate remain fully operational for students and staff residing in those axes.
Project Scope
The new gate construction is part of a 2026 campus face-lift initiative. The project includes:
- Expanded Lanes: Widening the approach to reduce peak-hour congestion.
- Digital Security Integration: Installation of automated barriers and CCTV surveillance hubs.
- Modern Aesthetics: A contemporary architectural design featuring the university’s lion insignia.
Duration
While the administration has not set a definitive “reopening” date, the project is estimated to last 8 to 12 weeks. Motorists are advised to allow extra time for campus entry and exit during peak lecture hours.
