The 2026 West African University Games have officially opened at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. The regional university sporting event is scheduled to run from October 2 to October 12, bringing together student-athletes, officials, coaches and delegates from universities across West Africa. OAU has been making preparations for the competition, including work on sporting facilities, accommodation, transportation, security, medical services and accreditation. The games are expected to provide a platform for students from different universities to compete in various sporting events while also encouraging interaction among young people across the West African sub-region. Beyond the sporting competition, the event is also expected to give participating students an opportunity to experience Ile-Ife and its cultural heritage. The host university has been preparing volunteers and support teams ahead of the arrival of participants. WAUG is one of the major university sporting events in the West African region and provides student-athletes with an opportunity to represent their institutions on a regional stage. The competition is also expected to generate increased activity around the university and surrounding communities during the 11-day event. As the games begin, attention will turn to the participating universities and athletes competing for honours across the various sporting disciplines. OAU said it remains committed to providing a welcoming environment and ensuring that the event runs successfully.
