Nigeria Secures 10,000 Additional Hajj Slots for 2027 Pilgrimage

Nigeria has secured an additional 10,000 slots for the 2027 Hajj pilgrimage, increasing the country’s total allocation from 50,000 to 60,000 pilgrims. The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria announced the development following further engagements between Nigerian authorities and Saudi Arabian officials. According to NAHCON, 7,500 of the additional slots will be allocated to state Muslim pilgrims’ welfare boards, agencies and commissions, while 2,500 will go to seven lead tour operator companies. The commission said the additional allocation followed sustained diplomatic engagements between the Federal Government of Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. NAHCON Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, expressed appreciation to the Nigerian government and Saudi authorities for the additional opportunity. The commission also assured intending pilgrims and other stakeholders that the additional slots would be administered transparently and in line with Nigerian and Saudi Arabian regulations. Nigeria’s original allocation for the 2027 pilgrimage stood at 50,000 slots. The additional allocation therefore represents a 20 per cent increase in the number of Nigerian pilgrims who can participate in the pilgrimage. NAHCON said the expansion would contribute to making Hajj more accessible while maintaining standards relating to service delivery, accountability and pilgrim welfare. The development is also expected to require adjustments to existing arrangements for the registration and processing of intending pilgrims. The commission had previously indicated that biometric information for intending pilgrims was required to be uploaded through the designated Saudi platform. With the increase in allocation, stakeholders will now await further details on how the additional slots will be distributed and processed. The 2027 Hajj preparations are expected to continue in the coming months as Nigerian authorities work with Saudi officials and state pilgrims’ welfare agencies.
