The Federal Government has committed more than ₦10.5 billion to a digital training programme designed to equip 32,000 Nigerians with skills and professional certifications for the global digital economy. The initiative, launched under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, is being implemented through a Digital Training Academy established by the Federal Ministry of Education. The programme is designed to provide participants with training in areas including software development, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and machine learning, cloud computing, IT automation, natural language processing and quantum computing. According to the Federal Government, the initiative is intended to help bridge Nigeria’s digital skills gap while improving young people’s access to employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. The programme attracted considerable interest, with 72,850 applications reportedly received from across the country during the application period. Of those who applied, 19,699 reportedly met the stated entry requirements, while 16,000 participants were selected for the first cohort. The wider programme is expected to reach 32,000 beneficiaries. Participants are also expected to gain access to international learning platforms and professional certification opportunities involving organisations including Google, IBM and Huawei. The government said the programme forms part of broader efforts to prepare Nigerians for changing labour-market demands and increase the country’s participation in the global digital economy. The initiative is expected to provide participants with technical skills that can be applied in both local and international employment markets.
