National Assembly Extends 2025 Capital Budget Implementation to December 31

The National Assembly has approved another extension for the implementation of the capital component of Nigeria’s 2025 budget. The extension moves the deadline from September 30 to December 31, 2026, giving ministries, departments and agencies additional time to execute projects contained in the capital budget. The decision followed consideration of a request for more time to implement the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act. The House of Representatives approved the extension during plenary, while the Senate also backed the move. Lawmakers said the additional time would enable government agencies to complete ongoing capital projects and reduce the possibility of projects being abandoned because of the expiration of the previous implementation deadline. This represents another adjustment to the implementation period of the 2025 capital budget. The budget implementation has previously received extensions during the year, with lawmakers citing the need to allow government agencies more time to execute approved projects. The latest extension means agencies now have until the end of December to continue implementing the affected capital projects. The development comes as the government continues to balance infrastructure spending with wider economic pressures and efforts to improve budget implementation. The effectiveness of the extension will ultimately depend on how much of the outstanding capital projects can be completed within the additional period.
