The Nigeria Police Force has adopted a comprehensive security roadmap covering the electoral cycle ahead of the 2027 general elections. The decision was announced at the conclusion of the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, CARSPO 2026, held in Owerri, Imo State. The three-day conference brought together senior police officers, government officials, security experts and representatives of other institutions to examine security challenges associated with elections. Under the new roadmap, the police plan to establish an election security task force with specific responsibilities, timelines, performance indicators and monitoring mechanisms. The force also said it would adopt a more predictive approach to election security by using historical information, current intelligence and lessons from previous elections to identify potential flashpoints. Election-security data is also expected to be digitised and maintained in a secure central database. Another major component of the plan is the increased use of digital and intelligence-led policing. According to the communiqué, the police intend to integrate relevant data systems and deploy artificial intelligence in areas including investigations, crime analysis, threat detection and operational decision-making. However, the police stressed that technology would support professional judgement rather than replace it and that its use would be subject to data-protection safeguards and oversight. The force also resolved to improve cooperation between security agencies through joint threat assessments, exercises, clearer command responsibilities and coordinated rapid-response arrangements. Training of officers was identified as another priority, with personnel expected to receive training on electoral laws, intelligence gathering, political neutrality, human rights, crowd management and conflict prevention. The roadmap also calls for officers found guilty of partisan conduct during elections to face appropriate sanctions. The police leadership said the resolutions reached at the conference should be translated into practical action across commands and formations ahead of the 2027 elections.
