SHEttima PUSHES ‘HIRE FROM NIGERIA’ CAMPAIGN FOR GLOBAL JOB OPPORTUNITIES

The Federal Government has stepped up efforts to connect Nigerian workers with international employers through the new “Hire From Nigeria” campaign. The initiative is designed to promote Nigeria’s large pool of young and digitally skilled workers to companies looking for talent around the world. Vice President Kashim Shettima has been promoting the initiative as part of efforts to position Nigeria as a major destination for global outsourcing and technology-enabled services. Under the campaign, Nigerian professionals could potentially provide services to international companies without necessarily leaving the country. The opportunities could cover areas such as technology, customer service, digital services, professional support and other jobs that can be performed remotely. The Federal Government believes Nigeria’s youthful population can become an important source of international earnings if the right skills and infrastructure are provided.
The initiative also comes at a time when unemployment and underemployment remain major concerns among young Nigerians. Government officials have said the country wants to train and certify millions of Nigerians so that they can compete for employment opportunities in the international market. However, several challenges will need to be addressed for the programme to succeed. These include reliable electricity, affordable internet access, digital skills, international payment systems and professional certifications. The government will also need to ensure that international companies can easily identify and contract qualified Nigerian workers. If successfully implemented, the initiative could create another pathway for Nigerians to earn foreign income while working from home or from local business centres. The campaign therefore represents an attempt to turn Nigeria’s large youthful workforce into a stronger participant in the global digital economy. The major test will be whether the initiative can move beyond international conferences and announcements to produce real contracts and sustainable jobs for Nigerians.
