University of Ibadan Officially Begins Search for 14th Vice-Chancellor

The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan (UI) has officially opened the race for the institution’s highest academic office. On Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Ganiyu Saliu, issued a formal advertisement declaring the position of Vice-Chancellor vacant, effective November 1, 2026.

The Vacancy and Timeline

The search for the 14th Vice-Chancellor comes as the tenure of the incumbent, Professor Kayode Adebowale, approaches its conclusion. To ensure a seamless transition at Nigeria’s premier university, the Council has triggered the selection process six months in advance. Interested applicants have six weeks from the date of the advertisement to submit their credentials.

Strict Eligibility Criteria

The University has set rigorous standards for the “First and Best” leadership role. According to the official gazette, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Academic Standing: Must be a Professor of at least 10 years’ standing at the time of application.

Age Limit: Must not be older than 65 years by the assumption of office on November 1, 2026.

Vision: Submission of a 2,500-word statement outlining a strategic vision for the University over the next five years.
