Nigeria is seeking stronger international cooperation to tackle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats affecting the country. Minister of Defence Christopher Musa has called for greater cooperation between Nigeria and international partners as the government continues its efforts to improve national security. The minister made the call during engagements connected to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Nigeria has faced multiple security challenges in recent years, including terrorism in the North-East, banditry and kidnapping in parts of the North-West and North-Central regions. The government has continued to rely on military operations while also considering broader reforms to the country’s security architecture. Musa has stressed that military action alone cannot solve all of Nigeria’s security challenges. According to the minister, stronger cooperation is needed between Nigeria and international organisations, neighbouring countries and other partners. Such cooperation can involve intelligence sharing, training, equipment, border security and coordinated action against criminal networks. The Federal Government has also discussed strengthening the country’s security forces and increasing personnel as part of efforts to respond to emerging threats. Another major issue under discussion is the possibility of expanding community-based security arrangements and improving coordination between federal and local security structures. The government believes a wider approach is necessary because many security threats extend beyond the boundaries of individual states and sometimes across national borders. For Nigeria, the challenge now is turning international cooperation into practical results that can improve security in communities affected by violence and criminal activity. The government continues to maintain that a combination of military operations, intelligence, policing, regional cooperation and development will be necessary to achieve lasting improvements in national security.
