Tinubu to Address Nigerians as Nigeria Marks 66th Independence Anniversary

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address Nigerians on Thursday, October 1, as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary. The nationwide broadcast is scheduled for 7:00 a.m. and will form a major part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s independence from British colonial rule in 1960. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga announced the planned address on Wednesday, directing television and radio stations as well as other electronic media platforms to connect to the broadcast through the Nigerian Television Authority and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria. The address comes as Nigerians across the country reflect on the nation’s 66-year journey, its achievements, challenges and hopes for the future. The Federal Government had earlier announced that this year’s Independence Anniversary activities would be relatively low-key. The programme included religious services, a public lecture and the President’s nationwide broadcast. At an Independence Anniversary lecture in Abuja on Wednesday, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, highlighted the administration’s economic reforms, infrastructure projects, security efforts and social programmes. Akume said the government’s reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, foreign exchange reforms and fiscal changes, were intended to stabilise the economy. He cited government figures indicating that Nigeria’s real GDP grew by 4.2 per cent in the first half of 2026. The government has also said the anniversary should provide an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers while looking ahead to a stronger and more prosperous nation. The October 1 broadcast is therefore expected to focus on the country’s current situation, government policies and the administration’s outlook for the years ahead. Nigeria became independent on October 1, 1960, making this year’s celebration the 66th anniversary of independence. As Nigerians mark the occasion, attention will be on President Tinubu’s message to the nation and the issues he chooses to highlight in his Independence Day address.
