Navy Recovers 80,000 Litres of Suspected Stolen Crude, Arrests Three

The Nigerian Navy has recovered approximately 80,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil during operations in the Niger Delta and arrested three suspected drug traffickers in a separate operation. The operations involved personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship Delta and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency. According to the Navy, two anti-crude oil theft operations were conducted in the Niger Delta creeks between Monday and Tuesday. During one operation in Oteghele community, security personnel discovered a dug-out reservoir containing about 30,000 litres of crude oil. A second operation in Obodo Omadino, Delta State, led to the discovery of another estimated 50,000 litres of crude oil. The combined recovery brought the quantity of suspected stolen crude discovered during the operations to approximately 80,000 litres. In another operation targeting illicit drug activities around Warri and its surrounding areas, Navy and NDLEA personnel arrested three suspects. The operation also resulted in the seizure of suspected illicit substances, including cannabis, cocaine and crystal methamphetamine. The Navy said the arrested suspects and recovered items had been handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and appropriate action. Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship Delta, Commodore Shehu Tasiu, said the joint operation demonstrated the ability of security agencies to tackle different forms of criminal activity within the Niger Delta. He said the operations covered issues ranging from crude oil theft and illegal petroleum activities to drug trafficking. Crude oil theft has remained a major concern for Nigeria because of its potential impact on oil production, government revenue and the environment. Security agencies have continued to conduct operations in oil-producing communities and waterways in an effort to disrupt illegal activities within the petroleum sector. The latest operation adds to those efforts, with authorities expected to continue surveillance and enforcement operations across the Niger Delta.
