“Having a Son Is Not My Priority” — Dangote Speaks on Male Heir

Billionaire businessman and President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has revealed that having a son is no longer a priority for him, saying he is confident that his three daughters are capable of carrying on his legacy. Dangote made the statement during an interview with ARISE News after he was asked whether he still hoped to have a male heir, particularly given the traditional importance placed on sons in some parts of northern Nigeria. The business mogul said he believes such matters are ultimately in God’s hands and should not be forced. “That is not my priority because God controls everything,” Dangote said. He explained that while a person may pray for a son, having a male child does not automatically guarantee the preservation of a family’s name or legacy. According to him, a son could even turn out to have a negative impact on a family’s reputation. “Sometimes when God doesn’t give you something, don’t push,” he said. Dangote also expressed strong confidence in his three daughters, Mariya, Halima and Fatima, saying he does not believe having a son would have produced better results. “I don’t think a son would have done better than these three daughters that I have,” he said. The billionaire revealed that he has watched his daughters’ involvement in the family business and believes one of them could eventually take a leading role in the conglomerate. He said all three daughters are highly educated, interested in the business and capable of contributing to its future development. However, Dangote stressed that his succession plans are not simply about handing the company over to a family member. He said he wants the Dangote Group to be professionally managed and governed at the highest level. His comments have renewed conversations around succession, gender expectations and the role of daughters in preserving family businesses in Nigeria. For Dangote, the focus appears to be less about whether his successor is male or female and more about ensuring that the business he built continues to operate successfully and contributes to the industrialisation of Africa.
