Osun Orders 24-Hour Security Alert, Sets Up Joint Task Force Amid Fresh Threats

The Osun State Government has ordered security agencies to maintain a 24-hour red alert across the state and approved the establishment of a Joint Security Task Force following recent security alerts and concerns over threats to lives and property. The decision was reached at a State Security Council meeting attended by the newly deployed Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, alongside other security commanders. The meeting was presided over by Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi. According to the state government, the new task force is intended to strengthen coordination, intelligence gathering and the response of security agencies to emerging threats. The government also said it would provide the necessary logistics to support the task force and improve security operations across the state. Residents Urged to Remain uthorities have called on residents to remain particularly vigilant around churches, mosques, schools and other public places. The State Security Council also appealed to members of the public to share credible and timely information with security agencies to help prevent possible attacks. The government, however, reassured residents that Osun remains safe and secure while urging communities and traditional rulers to strengthen local security oversight. The Nigeria Police and other security agencies have been directed to maintain heightened vigilance around the clock as part of efforts to respond to threats attributed by authorities to suspected terrorists and bandits. The state government also said the Ministry of Justice, the police and the Department of State Services would work together to ensure that suspects are properly investigated and prosecuted without unnecessary delay. The move comes after security concerns in parts of Osun, including reports of recent violent incidents. A separate report said the state’s latest security response followed a resurgence in violent crime. Reports from Osun said the Department of State Services had previously raised concerns about possible attacks on places of worship and public gathering centres. Those reports prompted some churches and mosques to introduce additional security measures. The reported intelligence has been presented as a warning rather than evidence that an attack is imminent, making the authorities’ emphasis on vigilance and information sharing particularly important. With the Joint Security Task Force now being established, attention will turn to how effectively the different security agencies coordinate their operations and respond to intelligence across the state. For residents, authorities have urged continued vigilance while avoiding unnecessary panic and reporting suspicious activity through appropriate security channels.
