Falconets Thrash England 3-0 to Reach U-20 World Cup Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s Falconets have powered into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after a convincing 3-0 victory over England in their Round of 16 clash in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. The Nigerian side made their intentions clear from the opening minutes, with Tosin Rafiu breaking the deadlock in the eighth minute. Rafiu capitalised on an attacking opportunity before calmly finishing to give Nigeria an early advantage. England responded with pressure and came close to an equaliser, but Falconets goalkeeper and captain Christiana Uzoma produced a crucial performance. Her biggest moment came when she saved Rachel Maltby’s first-half penalty, tipping the effort onto the crossbar and preserving Nigeria’s lead going into the break. Nigeria returned from the interval with even greater intensity. Just two minutes into the second half, Janet Akekoromowei doubled the Falconets’ advantage with a well-taken strike to put England under further pressure. The third goal arrived in the 73rd minute when substitute Mary Mamudu finished an attack to complete Nigeria’s 3-0 victory. The result ended England’s campaign and sent the Falconets into the final eight of the tournament. The victory marks a remarkable turnaround for Nigeria, who began their group campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain and a goalless draw against China. They responded emphatically by defeating New Caledonia 10-1 to secure their place in the knockout stage. Falconets head coach Moses Aduku said after the match that he believed England had underestimated his team. He, however, urged his players to quickly move on from the victory and focus on their next challenge. Nigeria will return to action in the quarter-finals on Sunday, September 20, against either hosts Poland or Colombia. The match will take place in Łódź, with a place in the semi-finals at stake. The Falconets, who have previously finished as runners-up at the U-20 Women’s World Cup twice, will now continue their pursuit of a first title at the tournament.
