Nationwide Suspension of the NASU and SSANU Strike Action
Administrative operations are set to resume across Nigerian public universities as the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU officially suspends its nationwide strike today, Monday, May 11, 2026. The decision follows a late-night resolution with the Federal Government regarding the payment of withheld salaries and the review of the university salary structure.
For students and staff, this suspension marks the end of the industrial action that had grounded essential campus services, including registration portals, bursary operations, and departmental clearances.
The Verified Terms of the Suspension
The suspension of the strike is based on a “conditional” agreement reached between union leaders and the Federal Ministry of Education. While the gates are reopening, the unions have made it clear that they are giving the government a two-week window to fulfill the following commitments:
Payment of Withheld Salaries: The immediate commencement of the disbursement of outstanding salary arrears for non-teaching staff.
Salary Structure Review: A firm timeline for the implementation of the 30% salary increase and the review of the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS).
Welfare Agreements: The formalization of the 2022 FGN/SSANU and NASU agreements that have been a major point of contention.
