The graduation gown comes off, the photographs are taken, congratulations pour in, and then reality arrives: “What next?”
For many Nigerian graduates, finding a job can be harder than earning the degree itself. Applications are sent, interviews are attended, yet many employers still demand years of experience for entry level positions. It becomes a frustrating cycle: you need a job to gain experience, but you need experience to get the job.
But waiting endlessly for employment is not the only option. Young Nigerians can explore online opportunities such as freelancing, virtual assistance, digital marketing, graphic design, writing, programming, online tutoring and content creation. Platforms such as Upwork, Fiverr, etc can help connect skilled workers with clients and employers.
Still, online work is not a replacement for decent jobs. Government and employers must create more opportunities, internships and graduate trainee programmes.
Nigeria has a young population with talent, energy and ambition. What they need is not another motivational speech. They need a chance.
Graduation should mark the beginning of a career, not the beginning of an endless search for one.
