The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has begun work on a proposed reform of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with greater emphasis on critical thinking, reasoning and life skills. JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, announced the development on Wednesday during the inauguration of a committee of education experts and stakeholders tasked with developing a framework for the proposed changes. According to JAMB, the current examination has remained largely unchanged for more than three decades and needs to be reviewed to determine whether it is still effectively identifying candidates who are likely to succeed in tertiary institutions. The proposed approach would move beyond simply testing candidates’ recall of subject knowledge. The committee is expected to examine ways of assessing how candidates reason, solve problems and apply solutions.
