ALL SCHOOLS ADMISSION UPDATE

Most Competitive Universities and Courses in Nigeria

Securing admission in Nigeria requires a mixture of academic brilliance and smart positioning. Every year, millions of candidates cluster around a tiny group of universities and professional courses, creating an artificial bottleneck. If you know the exact numbers and the level of competition you are up against, you can make informed decisions that save you from stayed at home for another year.

Data from the 2026 admissions policy meeting shows that a massive chunk of total applicants chose less than ten specific universities as their first choice.

The Three Most Sought After Institutions in the Country

Public universities in the southwestern region of Nigeria received the highest influx of applications this year. This high density means their screening systems will be incredibly ruthless.

Lagos State University (LASU): Holds the crown as the most applied-for university in Nigeria for the 2026 cycle, pulling a staggering 84,326 first-choice applications.

University of Lagos (UNILAG): Sits firmly in second place with 78,240 ambitious applicants fighting for limited slots.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU): Ranks third on the national log, recording 60,370 first-choice candidates.

If you chose any of these three schools, you must realize that you are competing against a stadium full of students. A basic pass mark will not save you here; you need to stand out.

The Five Toughest Fields of Study to Get Into This Year

Just as candidates cluster around specific schools, they also design their applications around five traditional professional courses. These fields have strict carrying capacities regulated by professional councils, meaning the schools cannot expand their intake even if they want to.

Medicine and Surgery: Remains the ultimate competitive battlefield. With tens of thousands of applicants nationwide, successful candidates typically need a UTME score above 280 and straight A1 or B2 grades in their science subjects.

Law: Highly saturated across all top-tier institutions. The faculty cut-off marks for regular merit lists rarely drop below 250 in major federal universities.

Pharmacy: Receives an enormous spillover from the medicine pool, making its departmental cut-off marks nearly as high as medicine itself.

Accounting and Economics: Represent the commercial sector’s highest peaks, attracting thousands of applicants who face stiff competition during the aggregate point calculations.

Balancing Ambition with Smart Strategy

If you scored between 150 and 220 and picked Medicine in UNILAG or Law in LASU, you are standing in a very dangerous position. The raw math shows that your chances of getting into the merit list are slim.

You can use this data to your advantage by shifting your ground. Swapping your course to a less competitive biological science or choosing a state university in a less congested state will drastically increase your chances of wearing a matriculation gown this year.
