Grief Hits Obafemi Awolowo University as Medical Student Dies During Clinical Examination

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been plunged into deep mourning following the sudden death of Oreoluwa Emmanuel Adewole, a Part IV (400-level) medical student. The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday at the College of Health Sciences, just as the student was preparing to undergo a clinical viva examination—a critical oral assessment in medical training.  

According to an official statement from the University’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the student reportedly complained of sharp chest pains during the session. Despite the immediate intervention of his lecturers and fellow medical students who were present at the venue, efforts to resuscitate him proved unsuccessful. He was rushed to the university’s medical centre and subsequently to the teaching hospital, where he was tragically confirmed dead.  

The news has sent shockwaves through the “Great Ife” community, especially within the College of Health Sciences. The Ife University Medical Students Association (IFUMSA) described Adewole as a “rising star” and a “solid pillar” of his class. Colleagues have expressed immense pain, noting that the late student had a bright future and no known underlying health conditions prior to his collapse.  

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, has extended heartfelt condolences to the family, siblings, and friends of the deceased on behalf of the university’s Governing Council and Senate. The university management is currently engaging with the bereaved family and relevant health authorities to provide support and fully understand the medical circumstances surrounding this sudden loss. This incident has also reignited conversations among the student body regarding the intense physical and mental pressure faced by medical students during high-stakes examination periods.
