Even billionaire status is no longer enough to secure a place among America’s 400 richest people.Media icon Oprah Winfrey, global pop star Taylor Swift and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are among a record 590 U.S. billionaires who failed to make the 2026 Forbes 400, despite their enormous fortunes.According to Forbes, the minimum fortune required to enter this year’s ranking has climbed to a record $4.4 billion, up by $600 million from the previous year.The 2026 Forbes 400, released on September 15, is also the richest edition in the ranking’s history, with the 400 members collectively worth an estimated $8 trillion.Among the famous billionaires left outside the ranking is Oprah Winfrey, whose estimated fortune stands at $3.4 billion.Pop superstar Taylor Swift, who has an estimated net worth of $2 billion, also falls below the $4.4 billion threshold.Meanwhile, Sam Altman, the CEO and co-founder of OpenAI, is estimated by Forbes to be worth $3.3 billion.Despite leading one of the world’s most valuable artificial-intelligence companies, Altman does not hold direct equity in OpenAI, according to Forbes. Much of his personal wealth has instead come from investments, including stakes in companies such as Stripe and Reddit.Forbes noted that the rising threshold reflects the extraordinary growth in wealth among America’s richest individuals, with the stock market and the booming AI and data-centre sectors contributing to the surge.The figures also highlight just how competitive the Forbes 400 has become.
