At least 20 people have been killed in a fatal multiple-vehicle crash along the Hawan Kibo–Jos route in Plateau State. The accident, which occurred on Friday, involved four vehicles and has once again raised concerns over road safety and the dangers faced by motorists travelling along major highways in the country. According to the Federal Road Safety Commission, preliminary findings indicate that brake failure may have contributed to the crash. The Hawan Kibo–Jos route is an important road connecting Plateau State with other parts of the country, including Abuja. Emergency responders were deployed to the scene following the crash as authorities worked to manage the aftermath and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The fatality figure makes the incident one of the more serious road crashes reported in the country in recent days. Road crashes remain a persistent safety concern in Nigeria, with factors including vehicle defects, road conditions, speeding and enforcement challenges frequently identified in investigations. Authorities are expected to continue examining the vehicles involved and other circumstances surrounding the crash. The incident has also renewed calls for motorists and transport operators to ensure vehicles are properly maintained, particularly their braking systems, before embarking on long-distance journeys.
