The latest figures have renewed public discussion around Nigeria’s borrowing, debt servicing, government revenue and how borrowed funds are being deployed.
The rise in the naira value of the debt stock, however, should not automatically be interpreted as equivalent to new borrowing alone, as exchange-rate movements can also affect the naira value of foreign-currency debt.

With the DMO’s latest figures now public, attention is expected to remain focused on Nigeria’s debt-management strategy and the economic outcomes associated with the country’s borrowing.
