A mother and her four children have died after fire engulfed their residence in Okochiri community, Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State. The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Friday and has thrown the community into mourning. According to reports from the community, the fire spread through the family’s residence before residents were able to put it out. The youths of the community reportedly made efforts to extinguish the flames before the arrival of the police. Five members of the family — the mother and her four children — were found dead following the incident. The exact cause of the fire had not been independently established at the time of reporting. Some community sources reportedly suggested that petrol may have been involved and that a spark could have ignited the fire. However, this explanation has not been independently verified and authorities are expected to determine the actual cause through investigation. The Senior Commander of the Civilian Joint Task Force in Okrika, Igwe Godswill, confirmed the incident and said details were still sketchy when members of the community arrived at the scene. He said the fire had already been put out before they arrived, while the police had taken over the investigation. The Rivers State Police Command also confirmed the incident. The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the danger of domestic fires and the importance of quick emergency intervention when a fire breaks out. As the community mourns the victims, the police are expected to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the devastating incident.
