At least 15 farmers and firewood gatherers have been killed in an attack blamed on suspected Boko Haram militants in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State. The attack reportedly occurred between late Wednesday and early Thursday in the villages of Ala, Gummna and Musune, about 130 kilometres northeast of Maiduguri, the state capital. Police confirmed the attack, while human rights officials said the victims were ambushed while carrying out routine activities, including farming and gathering firewood. Three other residents were reportedly still missing following the incident. Community members later recovered the bodies of the victims and buried them according to Islamic rites. Reports indicate that the victims included young men and older residents who had ventured into surrounding bush areas to work or gather firewood for their families. The attack has highlighted the continuing security risks faced by rural communities in parts of Borno, where civilians can be exposed to danger while attempting to carry out basic economic and household activities. Amnesty International condemned the reported killings and called for stronger protection for vulnerable communities. Security agencies are expected to continue efforts to establish the circumstances of the attack and account for those still missing.
