APM DEMANDS OKPEBHOLO’S RESIGNATION OVER ₦1,500 PETROL COMMENT

The Allied Peoples Movement has called for the resignation of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo following remarks attributed to him concerning petrol prices. The political party criticised the governor over his comparison of petrol prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The controversy centres on comments concerning petrol reportedly selling for around ₦1,500 per litre in Nigeria. The APM argued that comparisons between fuel prices in different countries should also take into consideration differences in income levels and purchasing power. The party subsequently demanded the governor’s resignation. The demand has generated another round of debate around petrol prices and the wider economic pressure facing Nigerians. Fuel prices remain a highly sensitive issue because changes in the cost of petrol can affect transportation, food prices, production costs and household expenses. For many Nigerians, the issue is therefore not simply the price of petrol itself but the relationship between fuel prices and their incomes. The APM’s demand represents the position of the political party and does not itself establish that the governor is legally required to resign. The controversy nevertheless highlights how economic issues continue to generate political reactions across the country. Petrol pricing is also likely to remain a major subject of discussion as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. Political parties, government officials and members of the public are expected to continue debating the impact of fuel prices and the government’s broader economic policies. For now, the controversy surrounding the governor’s comments has added another chapter to Nigeria’s ongoing debate over petrol prices and the cost of living.
