The Bayelsa State Government has engaged in direct, high-stakes negotiations to halt escalating industrial friction at Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma. The campus had faced disruptions over delays by the state in implementing critical financial allowances.
The ASUU-NDU branch, led by Chairperson Lucky Bebeteidoh, had initially embarked on an indefinite strike to protest the subnational government’s prolonged delay in implementing the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and the Professional Allowance. These allowances were core components of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed between the union and the state back in December 2025. To prevent a total collapse of the academic session, a government delegation led by the Deputy Governor and the Honorable Commissioner for Education hosted an emergency meeting with a joint delegation of ASUU executives and student leaders at the Government House in Yenagoa.
During the dialogue, the state government announced that it had successfully reviewed and agreed to all eight major demands tabled by the university union. The Deputy Governor reiterated the administration’s commitment to funding tertiary education, confirming that the state is working with the state bursary to finalize the budget allocations.
The financial framework ensures that the newly agreed 25% to 35% salary increments and outstanding allowance structures will be visibly captured in the upcoming salary disbursement cycle. Following the signing of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), ASUU-NDU held an early morning congress and officially announced the suspension of the strike action. Academic activities are slated to resume immediately to cover lost ground, though the union remains observant to ensure the promised budget adjustments manifest smoothly at the end of the month.
