The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised fresh concerns about the growing use of artificial intelligence to create and circulate misleading information ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The electoral body said the increasing sophistication of artificial intelligence presents a new challenge for election communication, particularly with the ability to produce convincing fake videos, audio recordings, photographs and other digital content. INEC’s concern centres on the possibility that manipulated material could be presented as genuine information and circulated widely before fact-checkers or authorities have an opportunity to respond. The commission has therefore stressed the need for its public affairs and communication officers to improve their ability to identify and respond to AI-generated misinformation. The warning comes as Nigeria prepares for another major election cycle. According to reports, INEC and media stakeholders have been discussing the risks associated with deepfakes and other forms of synthetic media. AI-generated content can make it increasingly difficult for members of the public to distinguish authentic statements from fabricated ones, particularly when such material is shared rapidly through social media platforms. INEC has called for stronger public awareness and better communication strategies as the country approaches the 2027 elections. The commission’s position is that election information must be carefully verified before it is accepted or shared. The warning does not mean that every controversial video, photograph or audio recording circulating online is fake. Rather, it highlights the need for citizens, journalists and institutions to verify digital material before relying on it. With social media expected to remain an important source of political information, the ability to identify manipulated content is likely to become an increasingly important part of election communication.
