Pop icon Madonna made a major return to the MTV Video Music Awards stage on Sunday, September 27, marking her first live VMA performance in 23 years.
The Queen of Pop opened the 2026 ceremony in Los Angeles with a star-studded performance that brought together some of the biggest names in contemporary pop music.
Madonna was joined by Sabrina Carpenter, who performed with her on “Bring Your Love,” their collaboration from Madonna’s latest album Confessions II. The performance then took another turn when Charli XCX appeared for a rendition of the Danceteria remix.

The highly anticipated appearance marked a significant moment in Madonna’s long history with the VMAs. She first became synonymous with the ceremony after her legendary “Like a Virgin” performance at the inaugural 1984 awards. Her previous VMA performance was in 2003, when she appeared alongside Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
The comeback also came during a major night for Madonna. She entered the 2026 ceremony as the night’s leading nominee and later took home seven awards, including Artist of the Year, while her collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, “Bring Your Love,” won Best Collaboration.
