Nigeria Takes Bigger Role in Global Education Financing as Italy Partnership Gains Attention

Nigeria has taken a prominent role in a global campaign aimed at raising billions of dollars to support education across developing countries. The country is co-hosting the Global Partnership for Education’s 2026–2030 replenishment campaign alongside Italy. The campaign seeks to mobilise US$5 billion to support education in more than 100 low-income and lower-middle-income countries. The initiative was highlighted during a high-level event in New York held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. Education Minister Tunji Alausa said Nigeria’s participation demonstrates the country’s willingness to contribute to international efforts aimed at improving access to quality education. The minister said education financing should not only focus on expanding access but also on strengthening education systems, supporting teachers and improving learning outcomes. Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu at the event, said education should be viewed as an investment in Nigeria’s economic future, productivity and stability. The event also brought together international leaders and education advocates, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and education activist Malala Yousafzai. Italy announced a €50 million contribution to GPE programmes and interventions, according to Channels Television. GPE Board Chair Jakaya Kikwete called for faster action on education financing amid a widening funding gap and declining development assistance. For Nigeria, the partnership comes as the Federal Government continues to highlight education, human-capital development and skills as important areas of national development. The campaign will now move into its 2026–2030 financing period, with governments and development partners expected to make and implement commitments towards expanding educational opportunities globally.
