Abia LG Workers Threaten Three-Day Strike Over Alleged Unpaid Salaries

Local government workers in Abia State have threatened to embark on a three-day warning strike over alleged unpaid salaries, salary arrears and outstanding promotion benefits. The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) said some affected workers have allegedly remained without salaries for almost three years. The union reportedly made its position known in a letter dated September 21, 2026, addressed to the Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. According to the union, 114 local government employees are affected by the salary dispute. NULGE called for immediate government intervention to resolve the outstanding issues and address the workers’ financial obligations. The union’s demand reportedly includes the payment of outstanding salaries and arrears as well as implementation of promotion benefits. The threat of industrial action comes amid continuing debates around the welfare and financial administration of local government workers across Nigeria. For the affected employees, prolonged salary delays have implications for household finances and their ability to meet basic obligations. NULGE has therefore urged the state government to intervene before the dispute escalates into industrial action. The threatened warning strike is expected to put further pressure on the relevant authorities to resolve the outstanding claims and determine the employment status of the affected workers. The allegations contained in the union’s letter represent the position of NULGE, while the response of the Abia State Government would be necessary to establish its position on the claims.
