UNIABUJA Convocation and Infrastructure Crisis
The University of Abuja concluded its combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies today, April 18, 2026, with the graduation of 12,624 students. While the ceremony celebrated academic milestones, it served as a platform for management to address a severe infrastructure deficit currently affecting the institution.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi confirmed that 77 students graduated with First Class honors. To reward academic excellence, the university granted automatic employment to the overall best-graduating students from the two sets.
The university management issued an urgent appeal to private investors regarding a critical shortage of student accommodation. Enrollment figures have surged following the introduction of new academic programs, but hostel development has not kept pace. This shortage has forced a significant portion of the student body into expensive and often insecure off-campus housing.
Prof. Fawehinmi also announced that UNIABUJA has secured a ₦4 billion grant under the 2026 Special Intervention for Health Professions. This funding will be utilized to upgrade facilities for Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing to increase student quotas and improve research capacity. The university was the only institution in the North-Central region selected for this specific federal intervention.
