The United States government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening relations with Nigeria as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary. The message came as Nigeria celebrated 66 years since gaining independence from British colonial rule in 1960. The United States’ acknowledgement reflects the longstanding relationship between both countries, which covers areas including trade, security, education, health and diplomatic cooperation. Nigeria and the United States maintain extensive people-to-people ties, with Nigerians living, studying and working in the United States. Security cooperation has also remained an important part of the bilateral relationship, particularly in areas involving counterterrorism and efforts against transnational crime. Economic relations between the two countries also continue to attract attention as Nigeria seeks investment and opportunities to expand its economy. The latest Independence Day message provides another indication of the continued diplomatic engagement between Abuja and Washington. Nigeria’s anniversary celebrations have also provided an opportunity for foreign governments and international organisations to send messages recognising the country’s independence. As the two countries continue their engagement, issues such as economic development, security, education, trade and technology are expected to remain important areas of cooperation.
