For two decades, BellaNaija has been at the centre of African entertainment, culture, lifestyle and fashion — and its 20th-anniversary celebration proved that the milestone deserved a red carpet just as extraordinary.
The BellaNaija at 20 Grand Red Carpet Experience, held under the theme “High Fashion Icon,” brought together some of Nigeria’s biggest names, with celebrities and creative personalities interpreting the dress code through bold silhouettes, couture craftsmanship and statement styling.
And judging from the looks that emerged from the celebration, this was not a night for playing it safe.
OSAS IGHODARO BRINGS SCULPTURAL ELEGANCE
Among the most striking appearances was Osas Ighodaro, who transformed the red carpet into a showcase of architectural fashion.
The actress appeared in an elaborate ivory-and-gold creation featuring a strapless corset, an enormous fan-pleated skirt and intricate gold detailing.
The dramatic inverted-heart silhouette gave the gown a sculptural quality, while metallic gold stripes, beadwork and pearl details added richness to the ivory fabric.
Her styling went even further.
Osas complemented the gown with traditional African threaded hair wrapped with gold wire and arranged into geometric forms, creating a striking connection between the hairstyle and the structure of the dress.
It was a look that combined African artistry, modern couture and old-world glamour in one statement.
MERCY EKE GOES BOLD IN BLUE
Mercy Eke took a completely different approach to the theme, arriving in a custom Amy Aghomi coat-gown that blended ice blue, cobalt, black, pearls and crystals.
The architectural design featured geometric velvet panels, an exaggerated funnel-style collar and wide bell sleeves, creating a powerful silhouette that immediately commanded attention.
Pearl piping traced sections of the garment, while hand-tacked crystal detailing added another layer of texture.
Mercy completed the look with cobalt blue heels, a statement pearl ring and an architectural updo, proving that high fashion does not necessarily require an elaborate gown to make an impact.
VEEKEE JAMES MAKES A DARK STATEMENT
Fashion designer Veekee James also embraced the theme with a dramatic custom creation from Abbas Woman, styled by Baudovin Ononiba.
Her floor-length oxblood leather coat-gown featured sculpted hourglass tailoring, exaggerated peplum hips and padded shoulders, creating an intentionally powerful silhouette.
The outfit was completed with a black high-neck layer, an oversized wide-brim hat, a beaded-fringe clutch and pointed heels.
The result was unmistakably editorial — dark, commanding and deliberately dramatic.
MORE THAN A RED CARPET
What made the BellaNaija celebration particularly significant was the way the fashion reflected the platform’s own history.
Since its launch in 2006, BellaNaija has grown into a major African digital media platform covering entertainment, lifestyle, weddings, fashion and popular culture. Its 20th-anniversary celebration therefore became more than a birthday party; it became a visual celebration of the creative industries BellaNaija has documented and promoted for two decades.
The “High Fashion Icon” theme gave guests the freedom to move beyond conventional red-carpet glamour and experiment with exaggerated proportions, couture detailing, African influences and avant-garde styling.
From Osas Ighodaro’s ivory-and-gold sculpture to Mercy Eke’s architectural blue velvet and Veekee James’ commanding oxblood leather, the evening demonstrated just how differently Nigerian fashion personalities can interpret the same theme.
A NIGHT OF STYLE, CULTURE AND STATEMENT FASHION
BellaNaija’s 20th anniversary may have been a celebration of two decades of storytelling, but on the red carpet, fashion became the language of the night.
The event offered a striking snapshot of where Nigerian fashion stands today — confident, experimental, culturally expressive and increasingly comfortable occupying the global fashion conversation.
With the bar set by the night’s “High Fashion Icon” dress code, the BellaNaija at 20 red carpet did exactly what a major fashion event should do:
It gave people something to look at, something to discuss and, most importantly, something to remember.
