25 YEARS LATER, EBUBE RETURNS: ‘ISSAKABA: THE RETURN’ BRINGS NOLLYWOOD’S ICONIC ACTION CLASSIC BACK TO THE BIG SCREEN

Twenty-five years after Issakaba became one of Nollywood’s most memorable action films, the legendary story is returning to cinemas — and Sam Dede is stepping back into the role that made Ebube an unforgettable name.

The wait is finally coming to an end.

Nollywood’s iconic action franchise Issakaba is making its long-awaited return with Issakaba: The Return, a new chapter that reunites veteran filmmaker Lancelot Imasuen with Sam Dede as the formidable Ebube.

The highly anticipated sequel is scheduled to hit cinemas nationwide on November 13, 2026, exactly 25 years after the original film emerged as a major title of its era.

For fans who grew up watching the original, the return of Ebube is more than another Nollywood sequel. It is a trip back to an era when action, traditional mysticism, community justice and larger-than-life characters dominated Nigerian home-video cinema.

EBUBE RETURNS

Sam Dede’s return is arguably the biggest nostalgia trigger surrounding the project.

The veteran actor reprises his iconic role as Ebube, the central figure from the original story. This time, however, the world he returns to has changed dramatically.

According to reports surrounding the new film, the story is set 25 years after the events of the original, with Ebube facing a new and more sophisticated wave of crime, darkness and insecurity.

That premise gives the franchise an opportunity to connect its old-school identity with contemporary Nollywood storytelling.

A NEW GENERATION MEETS THE CLASSIC

While Sam Dede provides the connection to the original, Issakaba: The Return also assembles a new generation of major Nigerian stars.

The cast includes Chidi Mokeme, Iyabo Ojo, Regina Daniels, Phyna, Nosa Rex, Alex Osifo, Charles Okafor and Mark Angel, alongside returning and veteran performers.

The combination of established Nollywood names, contemporary stars and familiar faces is expected to give the sequel a distinctly modern identity while preserving the spirit of the franchise.

FROM BAKASSI BOYS TO A MODERN NOLLYWOOD STORY

The original Issakaba, released in 2001, drew inspiration from the activities of the Bakassi Boys, a vigilante group associated with combating crime in southeastern Nigeria.

Directed and produced by Lancelot Imasuen, the film blended action, drama, horror and traditional mysticism, following Ebube and the Issakaba Boys as they confronted criminals terrorising their community.

Imasuen has previously reflected on the continued relevance of the story, noting that the social problems that inspired the original film have not disappeared but have evolved into different forms, including kidnapping, banditry and terrorism.

That gives the new film a deeper layer beyond nostalgia: it revisits a fictional world originally shaped by concerns about security and justice while placing its characters in a very different Nigeria.

THE COMEBACK FANS HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR

The official trailer has now been released, giving audiences their first substantial glimpse of the return of the franchise.

For longtime Nollywood audiences, the biggest question is simple: Can the new Issakaba capture the magic of the original while delivering the scale and visual quality expected from modern cinema?

With Sam Dede back as Ebube, Lancelot Imasuen back at the helm and a star-studded cast joining the franchise, the stage is set for one of Nollywood’s most nostalgic cinematic returns of 2026.

Issakaba: The Return arrives in cinemas nationwide on November 13, 2026.

After 25 years, Ebube is coming back — and this time, the fight has changed.
